The Challenge

Marine and offshore steel corrodes faster than almost anything else — immersed, splashed, and salt-laden, often while the asset is in service and cannot be dry-docked or shut down. Hot work at sea and offshore is heavily restricted, and conventional coatings will not bond to the damp, contaminated surfaces that are unavoidable in a marine environment.

A Real Rumford Example
Vessel hull worn and pitted below the waterline Before
The Problem
Hull Pitted Below The Waterline

Corrosion and erosion had worn and pitted the hull plate below the waterline, with the old coating breaking down where access is hardest.

The Solution
Rebuilt & Coated With Belzona 5811

Pitted plate rebuilt and the hull coated with Belzona 5811 Immersion Grade — cold applied to damp, manually prepared steel for long-term immersion protection.

Immersion protection · No hot work · Smooth hydrodynamic finish

Cold applied · long-term immersion protection against corrosion

Outcomes vary by component, load, and access — contact Rumford Industrial Group for a project-specific assessment.

Hulls, decks, ballast and cargo tanks, bilge areas, risers, splash zones, and offshore structural steel suffer corrosion, erosion, and impact damage. The most vulnerable areas — the waterline and splash zone — are precisely where access is hardest and surfaces are wettest.

Belzona surface-tolerant composites and coatings are formulated to bond to damp, wetted, and manually prepared steel, and to cure even underwater, so repairs can be made afloat and in the splash zone. Applied cold by Rumford Industrial Group, they eliminate hot work and keep vessels and structures in service.

Belzona Solutions for This Application

Propulsion & Steering Gear Repair
Corrosion repair with galvanic isolation on jet tubes, kort nozzles, and bow thrusters, plus cavitation damage repair on rudders, stabilisers, kort nozzles, and cylinder liners.
Component Forming & Equipment Alignment
100% solids, non-shrink materials for forming pintles, bearing housings, and bush seats, along with chocking/grouting systems for aligning heavy equipment and laying propulsion system foundations.
Ancillary Equipment & Tank Lining Protection
Corrosion and erosion repair coatings for onboard ancillary equipment (heat exchangers, valves, pumps) and internal tank lining coatings, including options approved for potable water contact.
