Challenge
Across a municipal fleet maintenance campus, the concrete floors in the lift garage, motorcycle bay, heavy truck garage, and weld shop had reached the end of their service life. The original coating had broken down under constant vehicle traffic, lift loads, oils, and washdown, leaving worn, stained, and porous concrete that was difficult to keep clean, and expansion joints that needed rebuilding before any new system could be installed.
Belzona Solution
The old coating was fully removed and the slabs were mechanically ground back to sound concrete. Expansion joints were prepared with Belzona 4911 and filled with Belzona 4511. Belzona 4151 (Magma-Quartz Resin) was then used as a primer to fill the deeper imperfections left by grinding, tinted to the client's chosen color with a colorant pack and applied at 6 mils using rollers and a notched squeegee. The wearing surface was Belzona 5231 (SG Laminate) in an anti-slip grade with aluminum oxide grit blended in at manufacture, applied in two 6-mil coats with the same roller and notched-squeegee technique. Two coats were specified deliberately: it keeps the anti-slip aggregate suspended where it belongs at the surface, and it reduces the chance of air bubbles in the finished film. Traffic lanes and parking bays were then re-striped in safety yellow and blue.
- Belzona 4911 (Magma TX Conditioner)
- Belzona 4511 (Magma-Quartz Joint Filler)
- Belzona 4151 (Magma-Quartz Resin)
- Belzona 5231 (SG Laminate)
Result
All four areas came back into service with a seamless, chemical-resistant, anti-slip floor that is far easier to clean and clearly marked for traffic and parking. Because Belzona 4151 accepts a colorant pack, the finish was matched to the client's preferred color, with safety colors available for future areas. Work was staged area by area so the shops kept operating throughout.
