Challenge
An auger screw at a machine shop needed protection against abrasive wear. Abrasive material moving along the flights thins the steel over time, costing throughput and edge profile and eventually forcing a weld overlay or a replacement screw.
Belzona Solution
Rumford Industrial Group coated the auger with Belzona. The application area was first bead blasted to give a clean surface profile for bonding. The leading surface of the flights, which takes the abrasive load, was then coated with Belzona 1812 at 125 mils thick, and the opposite side and shaft were coated with Belzona 1321 at 20 mils thick. The system is cold applied, so no hot work was needed.
- Belzona 1812 (Ceramic Carbide FP)
- Belzona 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal)
Result
The auger now has a thick, abrasion-resistant wear layer on its working face and a protective coating on the opposite side, extending its service life without weld overlay or a replacement screw.
