Many of you will remember our radio interview with Rick Craner of Thunder Bay Power from October of 2006. Well, I was driving around Michigan last month and decided to make the trip to Alpena to see how everything was going.
If you remember in the radio interview, Rick talked about one of the runner blades which had about a square foot broken off due to a log jam. Rick had taken some expanded metal and tack welded it to form the repair area, and then formed the runner with Belzona® 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal). Then they top coated both of the runner blade assemblies on that unit with some Belzona® 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) and Belzona® 1341 (Supermetalglide). The 1341 provides the slick surface so Thunder Bay Power can generate more electricity using less water. So, that’s the backstory. Are you with me? When I saw Rick on May 12th he said they had 16 years on that repaired runner blade - 16 years! Rick has no plans to ever replace the turbines because the Belzona has adequately addressed the wear issues – and provides energy efficiency too. We have a lot of customers that have Belzona applications that have been in service for 20 – 30 years and here is another one. We would like to invite you to bring us in on your next maintenance project so we can help you repair, protect and improve your component equipment.
