| Storage of molten sulfur is certainly not without its perils. Carbon steel will not corrode in the presence of molten sulfur provided moisture is excluded from the system. All too often though, a small leak forms at a connection in the headspace of the vessel and a vicious cycle begins. A little corrosion allows a little communication with the atmosphere and a little bit of moisture and air to enter the headspace. This moisture readily reacts with H2S to form hot concentrated sulfuric acid which is incredibly aggressive to the carbon steel connections. These then begin to corrode rapidly allowing yet more moisture and air ingress. Belzona coatings have been used for years in this service and very often not until often after a fire has occurred. Why tempt fate; many grades of steel are simply ill suited for molten sulfur service since they have non-zero corrosion rates in the presence of hot concentrated sulfuric acid. An appropriate Belzona coating can bring carbon steel on par with high nickel alloys when it comes to resisting these conditions and at only a fraction of the cost and time and with no lead time whatsoever.
